There is a big difference between beauty pageants and modeling. Children in parades grow up believing that the center of attention is on them; how they look, what they can do, and how they manifest as individuals. They are taught to sell themselves. Unfortunately, in the real world of fashion, it’s all about the product and selling it. Although fashion and runway models need to have specific aesthetic qualities and certain skills, their main objective is to make a product look good, to excite the customer and to make them want to buy.
The parade moms are known for being extremely competitive. Everyone wants to be on top of the game, know more about the industry, win the most titles and crowns, and have the most beautiful, talented, world peace-loving child in the entire world. But what these moms don’t realize is that they are peddling their kids false hope when they promise that one day all the late rehearsals, dance classes, American history lessons, and hair-pulling will be worth it. . This is not the case. So many young pageant princesses are crushed when they discover that all those years of intense training; Rhythmically jumping down the runway, grinning with all your teeth bared, and delicately shaking your hair while winking and flirting with audiences, has molded you into exactly what a fashion agency isn’t looking for in a couture model.
A great deal of time, effort, and money goes into beauty pageants. Many pageant moms will hire pageant coaches and dance coaches, both at great cost. They will then spend a fortune on outfits for each of the different rounds. Elaborate and custom made party dresses, one-of-a-kind swimwear pieces, costumes, accessories and stage accessories for the talent show, coronation dresses, etc. Then there’s the foot tall, the 30-inch long hair pieces, custom molded dental fins to hide any baby / imperfect teeth, abundant pairs of diamond-encrusted shoes, false eyelashes, bottle after bottle and tube after tube. of bright pink blush, thick stage base, lipstick and glitter. All of this is used to enhance the features, body, and overall image of the Pageant Princess and make them look as unrealistic as possible, all in the hopes of being crowned Pageant Queen.
Fashion designers will also invest a tremendous amount of time, effort, and money in a fashion show for their clothing. This money will be spent on lighting, sound engineers, stage support, models, stylists, hairdressers, and makeup artists, all geared toward attracting their clothing to an audience of buyers and celebrities.
Unlike runway girls, runway models don’t try to steal the show. The goal of a fashion show is to sell clothes, not people. If the model blew kisses, danced around the stage like a fairy, distracted the audience and did not make the dress look good, the designer would not sell her clothes and therefore would not have a business. That’s why pageant girls find it difficult to transition from beauty queen to super model.
So, if you are a pageant queen and hope to become a fashion model one day, you need to make sure you fully understand the difference between the two. If you love being the center of attention, you can go on stage without a face full of paint and hair taller than a toddler, you may have to accept that the world of modeling is not for you.
