The Miniature Pomeranian, a toy dog of the Nordic family, is an active, compact, short-backed dog. Originally used as a sled dog in Iceland and Lapland, the Pomeranian has now become a great companion for humans. Contrary to the size available on the market today, Pomeranians were bred to be much larger and weigh about thirty pounds. But breeders later went to great lengths to reduce the size of the breed. According to the standard specified by the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Pomeranian can weigh between three and seven pounds, however, Pomeranians who participate in dog shows must weigh between four and six pounds.
The dog has unlimited intelligence. By having a great lively character, the dog extrovertly displays his intelligence in almost all aspects. Although it is very small in size, it is extremely alert and attentive to strangers. Due to these qualities, the Miniature Pomeranian makes a great watchdog. His intelligence is a great asset in dog training that can be applied in various fields, including different therapies. The miniature Pomeranian is a symbol of beauty and intelligence. Therefore, he is a valued show dog on the one hand, a great friend for life on the other.
The Miniature Pomeranian has an exquisite double coat consisting of a soft, dense undercoat and a long, straight, shiny, rough-textured coat. The coat is significantly dense on the neck, the front of the shoulders, and the chest. This makes the fur in these areas look like a frill. Body hair is longer compared to hair on the head and legs. The tail is really beautiful with the long straight hair, which is widely overflowing. The life expectancy of a typical Pomeranian is around twelve to fifteen years, however it can live up to twenty to thirty-five years in some cases.
Although health complications are not as common in the Miniature Pomeranian, they can still suffer from some complications, such as a dislocated patella. This is common among miniature breeds. Also, Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome, hip dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, and collapse of the trachea can occur in Pomeranians. They are also susceptible to skin conditions like acute moist dermatitis, hot spots, follicular dysplasia, and a few others.
Regular grooming is essential for the Miniature Pomeranian. Regularly brushing your little Pomeranian will keep him tangle-free and keep his hair thick and fluffy. Although the coat needs few trims, shaving is almost unnecessary. Regular nail and ear care is also highly recommended. Bathing your Pomeranian too often is not a good idea, as it can damage the skin’s texture and coat shine by removing essential oils. Like many other breeds, the Miniature Pomeranian is very susceptible to dental problems, so regular dental care is also necessary. A minimum of one toothbrush per week is required.
Many great personalities possess Pomeranians, including Sir Isaac Newton, Queen Victoria, Michelangelo, Paris Hilton, Sharon Osborne, Maria Sharapova, and many others. There are many interesting stories about these companion dogs and some famous personalities. The Pomeranian of Michelangelo, the great Italian Renaissance painter, witnessed the great work of the Sistine Chapel. Another interesting event is of course with Diamond, Sir Isaac Newton’s Pomeranian, who had flipped a candle and set fire to some valuable research articles and created a painful story in the age of scientific invention.
