How Hidden Leaks Affect Your Home

While leak indicators are often visual, sometimes they are not. If you notice a significant increase in your water bill, this may indicate that you have a hidden pipe leak. To stop leaks before they cause serious damage, you need to learn where to look for the leak and what you are looking for.
How to Track a Hidden Pipeline Leak
1. Look for discoloration on the walls of your house. There are several types of discoloration caused by hidden leaks in pipes, such as stains with distinct edges, black streaks, or gray streaks. Make sure to cover the entire wall because pipe joints, called fittings, are often placed in the corners of the wall or where the wall borders the floor or ceiling.
2. Be sure to wear gloves when inspecting your walls for moisture, as some types of mold are harmful to your health. If you want to test an area for moisture, rub the area, wearing gloves, and inspect the gloves for any type of sheen for moisture. Then rub your fingertips to see if you feel slipping.
3. Inspect your walls for mold or mildew. This is usually a very good sign that you have found an internal leak. Common colors for mold and mildew are black, white, orange, or green spots. Be sure to check the top and base cabinets for mold as well.
4. Smell the air for a musty or musty odor, as this is often a good sign that you are about to find a hidden leak.
