Economy cars are all the rage today as gas prices soar to record highs. Honda’s fuel cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity, is making a big impact in California. The California Hydrogen Highway is a series of hydrogen refueling stations in California for fuel cell vehicles – this state is leading the way. But did you know there’s a hydrogen conversion kit you can install yourself this weekend to improve the gas mileage in your current car, truck or SUV?
Honda’s fuel cell car, the Honda FCX Clarity, is one of the most economical and environmentally friendly cars on America’s roads today. In fact, it’s among the best gas mileage cars of all time, with an estimated fuel economy of 77 in the city and 67 on the highway.
The only problem is the lack of infrastructure. Hydrogen filling stations are not that common, so you really need to keep an eye on your fuel gauge. Honda’s fuel cell vehicle has fairly limited availability; in fact, Jamie Lee Curtis was the second customer for the FCX Clarity, when she took delivery at the end of July this year. And sadly, at this point, it looks like Honda fuel cell cars won’t be mass-produced until 2018!
Economy cars are not only being sold today, but are being born, by owners of gas-guzzling cars, trucks and SUVs in the form of hydrogen conversions. Also known as hydrogen generators, these alternative fuel conversion kits allow your vehicle to get better fuel economy and increase fuel consumption through the use of a hydrogen cell and water electrolysis.
While Honda’s fuel cell needs pure hydrogen gas stored on board in high-pressure tanks, a DIY hydrogen conversion produces hydrogen on demand in a small container under the hood. To build your own economy cars (using hydrogen to supplement gasoline) you just need a few household items that you can find at your local hardware store. You can get the DIY auto conversion kit plans online and get the job done this weekend for under $200.
This under-the-hood device is based on ancient technology that uses battery current to charge water and release hydrogen atoms. Although hydrogen generators were invented decades ago, they were not widely known until the 1990s, when they began to be used in Hummers for the US military.
