In modern times, stock exchanges operate all over the world and have become highly regulated institutions. Investors intending to buy and unload shares of shares must do so indirectly through a stockbroker, who pays to hold a position in the stock market. Organizations with shares traded on the exchange are considered “listed” and must meet specific criteria, which vary by exchange. Most market exchanges began as floor exchange markets, in which commercial traders made deals in person. The world’s largest exchange, the New York Exchange, still operates this way, but most international exchanges have now gone fully electronic.

Our account of stock exchanges dates back to 12th century France, when it is believed that the first brokerage houses held currency, credit trading, and government securities. Informal stock markets survived across Europe in the 17th century, where traders met outdoors or in coffee shops to arrange trades. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, created in 1602, became the first authorized stock market after it began trading shares of the Dutch East India Company. Those transactions were the first shares of the company ever launched.
