In the search for better nutrition and wellness, I have come across a special category of natural foods. They’re called superfoods, and basically their title says it all: They’re so super-dense in nutrients and low in calories that they can dramatically improve your health, prevent or cure disease, and may even reverse some of the effects of aging.
They are by far the healthiest foods from each of the food groups, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, protein, dairy, herbs and spices, fats, and oils. So here are the 5 superfoods:
1) Almonds: Like most nuts, almonds contain monounsaturated fats, which help keep our arteries unblocked and minimize the risk of heart disease. They are an optimal source of protein, fiber and many minerals. They are rich in vitamin E, and also contain amounts of folic acid and vitamin B2. Stick with the raw almonds and for even greater absorption of the vitamins and minerals, before eating them, soak them for about 8 hours in the water.
2) Olive Oil: In Mediterranean countries people eat a lot of olive oil (including me!). This is the best natural oil and the reason for this is mainly due to its high concentration of monounsaturated fats (around 80%!!) which help reduce bad cholesterol. It is high in polyphenols (a powerful antioxidant), vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cells from oxidation, fiber, and minerals such as copper.
3) Pumpkin: Pumpkin is very rich in carotenoids. They give you enough beta-carotene (only carrots and potatoes have more) and are the main source of alpha-carotene. Carotenoids have very high antioxidant activity and are anticancer. It’s rich in zeaxanthin and lutein, both of which are great for eagle-eye vision! And don’t throw pumpkin seeds away: they’re a super source of zinc, fatty acids, and a great source of plant protein.
4) Coconut: In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is called “kalpa vriksha”, which literally means “the tree that provides all the necessities of life”. Some of its uses are: food, drink, medicine, construction materials, kitchen equipment, and fuel. A single coconut has as much protein as a quarter-pound lean hamburger. One of the most valuable things that comes from this tree is “coconut oil” with many health benefits (heart disease prevention, antimicrobial action, weight loss) Even coconut water makes a great natural isotonic drink!
5) Flaxseed: In the past, flaxseed was used only for horse and bird feed. In the last decade after many studies concluded that it is very beneficial for our health, it has earned the title of ‘superfood’. It is extremely high in alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fat, and very high in lignans, which have antitumor properties. Flaxseed is high in fiber and B vitamins. It is very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people trying to reduce their intake of starches and sugars.
