It cannot be said exactly who invented fireworks, but it is believed that they originated in ancient China. Story after story was told that the fireworks were accidentally found when a cook had mixed saltpeter, charcoal and sulfur, and placed the burning mixture in a bamboo tube which then exploded. The finding of fireworks is often related to gunpowder, as they work on similar principles. But there were also stories that fireworks and gunpowder were first discovered in India.
While the source of who invented fireworks is still uncertain, over time various uses were created for black powder. One of them was to be turned into firecrackers, which was made by a Chinese monk. In Chinese beliefs, firecrackers are a tool to scare away ghosts and evil spirits through loud sounds. Thus, at prosperity parties or even funerals, fireworks would be used to get rid of bad luck so that they do not carry it with them after the occasion. However, the use of black powder did not stop there. The Chinese used it to drive away real threats like the Mongol army, which was a great threat. Hence, the first rockets were made, in the form of dragons.
It was only in the 17th century that fireworks were introduced to the US Europeans, on the other hand, discovered fireworks and gunpowder when traveling through China, and the Crusades or Marco Polo imported them back. The Europeans would later use them to celebrate and as a weapon against native tribes. And Queen Elizabeth II even created a post called “Master of Fire” to make sure royal fireworks light up properly as planned.
While some places have made certain fireworks illegal, many people still try to get hold of them to celebrate events like the New Years and other major events or holidays. Governments around the world are some of the main customers during these seasons.
