Ultrasound Technician Education in New Jersey
CAAHEP, a premier accrediting agency, recognizes seven accredited New Jersey sonography schools located in various New Jersey cities. The certificate is earned through training at a hospital, educational or vocational institution, or in the Armed Forces. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree can be earned by attending a sonography program at a college or university. Schools offer either a general sonography concentration, which includes OB/GYN, or a cardiac specialization. Currently, the state of New Jersey does not require a license to perform ultrasound procedures. At a minimum, it is important to obtain ARDMS certification to demonstrate possession of the necessary skills and knowledge in ultrasound technology that meet nationally recognized standards.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of 2,420 positions for May 2012, indicating an excellent employment outlook for sonographers in New Jersey. Statistics indicate that 90 jobs are expected annually with two-thirds due to growth and one-third due to replacements. The average annual salary for sonographers in New Jersey is $68,080, which is higher than the national average salary for sonographers. Jobs are clustered in the most populous areas of Newark, the NY-NJ metropolitan area, and the New Brunswick-Edison area.
